Celebrity Homes: Buy Jacqueline Kennedy’s Childhood Home – Before she called the White House home, Jacqueline Kennedy grew up in a Georgian-style mansion overlooking the Potomac River in Washington, D.C. Then known as Jacqueline Bouvier, the future fashion-plate moved into the home in the 1940s after her mother married Standard Oil heir Hugh D. Auchincloss, who owned the property. The estate, nicknamed “Merrywood,” is currently on the market by Sotheby’s International Realty for an impressive $49.5 million, making it one of the most expensive properties in the area.
Merrywood was originally built in 1919 and features nine bedrooms, 11 full baths, two partial bathrooms, an exercise studio, indoor and outdoor pool, tennis court, and climate-controlled wine cellar across 23,000 square feet, as well as an office, staff accommodations, and even a separate carriage house that includes a four-car garage. Many of the original interiors, including the living room’s ornate plaster moldings, are still in place, and an elevator transports guests and residents easily between four floors.
The home sits on seven acres and is owned by America Online cofounder Steve Case, who bought the house for $24.5 million in 2005. Case and his wife Jean, the chairman of the National Geographic Society, are selling the sprawling home because they “are empty-nesters and are traveling more.”
