Dane Austin believes that if we live in homes that are beautifully designed, and in alignment with our definition of comfort and wellness, our lives feel complete. It is that ideal upon which he founded his design firm, Dane Austin Design. Dane’s path to design started at the Corcoran School of the Arts and Design at George Washington University. He moved to Europe to study the history of decorative arts at Sotheby’s Institute of Art, London, and then to Paris where he attended the Institut d’Etudes Supérieures des Arts.

Early in his career, Dane worked in fashion before deciding to specialize in luxury interiors. Dane’s passion for his chosen career quickly became clear when he began creating beautiful interiors for clients who were drawn to his keen eye for color and inherent sense of style. In a career that includes numerous accolades, some standouts are 2019 recipients of New England Home Magazine’s 5 Under 40 award, celebrating New England’s most exceptional emerging design talent. 2018 winner of the IFDA (International Furnishings & Design Association) Charity Challenge, and in 2015, the Excellence in Design award from ASID (American Society of Interior Designers). Dane and his husband, Joshua, share their gambrel shingle-style home, built-in 1905, with their sheepadoodle, Otis Bradford. A sought-after speaker and guest lecturer, Dane also mentors design students throughout Massachusetts and is a past board member of the ASID.

Designed to be lived in as an actual “family home,” our goal was to imbue this new build property with a sense of history and heirloom. Inspired by the estate’s location beside a river, there is a continuous thread of sapphire, the homeowner’s favorite color, running through every room.

“These fun-loving homeowners were referred by past clients during a mutual friend’s 40th Birthday party. Dane and his team were originally hired to shift a few rooms around when their son left for college. “Dane created well-functioning spaces for all, spreading color along the way. And he didn’t waste a thing. The homeowner, who has since tasked the designer with revamping the roof deck, characterizes the updates as “crisp” and “sharp.” Austin says, “I look at every element and ask, ‘Is it special, interesting, and unique?’” Now, every room is all of the above.”

“I always presented what I called vanilla, chocolate, and strawberry options,” relates Austin. “Vanilla being neutral; chocolate being rich and sophisticated, and strawberry being the ‘joyful verve’ option. The client always went for the verve. He liked the wow factor—unexpected whimsy within a design.” The eye-catching and ingenious results are a tribute to both the designer’s skill and his strong relationship with his clients.

By the same token, it must function as a personal retreat that allows her to recharge. The homeowner is thrilled with her new modern urban abode, which Austin has witnessed firsthand as a dinner party guest. ‘It’s the greatest reward seeing how the clients live in the home,’ says the designer. ‘When the house is filled with laughter, it really shines.’”

“It’s not every day that clients ask you to design a home around Lady Gaga’s twelve-inch stilettos,” says Austin. “But when they do, you run with it.” The lady of the house says, “We wanted the fun part of our personalities to be represented front and center.” Said stilettos, purchased at a fundraising auction, are displayed on a pedestal with a spotlight like fine art. “They convey the couple’s flair for dramatic style,” Austin says.

The key to success with all of his clients is trust and accountability, notes Austin. Of course, it helps that his aesthetics are impeccable. When asked what his client thought about his new home design, Austin says he was recently asked to renovate the client’s New York City apartment. The client wrote: “Perhaps we can do as well in New York as we did in DC, which I must say, sets the bar pretty high.”
