Astonishing White House Holiday Decorations 2016 – One hundred wreaths. Sixty-three Christmas trees. Sixty-five thousand ornaments. This year, designer Bryan Rafanelli worked closely with First Lady Michelle Obama to transform 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue into a veritable winter wonderland one last time.
But while the sheer volume of decorations would astonish even the most spirited holiday reveler—after all, there are enough garlands to span the length of more than three football fields—the White House’s festive display draws its greatest strength as a visual reflection of President Obama’s political legacy and the true essence of the season.

“I want to thank Rafanelli Events for helping us welcome Americans of all backgrounds and walks of life to the White House—which is truly the people’s house—for the holidays,” Mrs. Obama said in a statement. “Yet again, they have transformed the White House into a holiday wonderland that highlights so many core American values: the importance of friends and family, the health and well-being of our young people, the service and sacrifice of our military, and the power of education.
I am thrilled, during our last holiday season here, to share this amazing work with the tens of thousands of guests from across our country and around the world who will visit the White House this month.”
In keeping with this year’s theme—the Gift of the Holidays—each room offers a creative take on blessings that are often taken for granted. In the library, where more than 2,700 books line the shelves, the Gift of Education draws inspiration from the halls of learning: Rulers and crayons trim the trees, and festive ornaments spell out the word girls in 12 languages, a nod to the First Lady’s Let Girls Learn initiative. The Gift of Service, which honors military families in the Booksellers room, comes to life with a screen that allows visitors to send messages to our troops, an installation of flags, and gold stars hung on the tree.
