Best Projects by Celebrity Interior Designer Martyn Lawrence Bullard – Martyn Lawrence Bullard has built his reputation decorating celebrity mansions in dramatic and sumptuous ways. Moderated by Laura Houldsworth, executive retail editor House and Garden, the conference Star Style, Decorating for Celebrities, at Maison Objet 2017 January edition, was an enthusiastic conversation about sophisticated and glamorous interiors.

The Los Angeles-based British interior designer has always a design fan and with 12-years-old he could already be found shopping at a London’s flea market with his pocket money. The hobby suddenly became a full-time job and now Martyn’s A-List clientele includes Cher, Ellen Pompeo, Tommy Hilfiger and the Kardashians, among a lot of other celebrities.

When Martyn made the project for Khloe and Kourtney Kardashian’s new homes, it was live, on camera – “I’ve been filmed every minute doing it”, he said – actually he thought of the house not only like a home but also like a TV studio. The projects of Khloe and Kourtney’s houses were covered for Architectural Digest and the issue was a bestseller. Actually, it was the first time AD made a cover with the two sisters.

Kourtney last home was colourful and crazy, but this time they made a smooth and elegant decor featuring mid-century furniture. Khloe is really passionate by fashion, she has three thousand pairs of shoes. Her house is right next to her sister’s, which she bought from Justin Bieber. Kardashian’s homes have custom-made deep sofas, everything is over-scaled to look good on camera, and there’s also a magnificent outdoor fireplace.

Another of Martyn’s projects was Tommy Hilfiger Golden Beach Home in Miami, which was designed in cooperation with studio 54 and with art pop as an inspiration. The house is white, as if it was a gallery. At the dining room, metal curtains open in a dramatic way and the kitchen was done in a 70s theme, very Italian, black and white floor, white lacquer. The bar has a disco ball original from the 70s. The glamorous bedroom is decorated with Marilyn Monroe pictures in pale pink, one of her last series. She looks very sexy and was a little bit drunk during the session. The bed has a flat screen that goes up without living the bed.

Martyn meets Ellen Pompeo at John Galliano show in Milan. They share a beer and discovered later that they are neighbours in LA. The blue sofas and details at the living room are a must-have and the living room has a Moroccan twist with an unusual light.

When the interior designer met Cher it was instant love, the diva owns a 40 thousand sp. feet Malibu home with private suits, a sitting area in the end of the bedroom, Indian fountains and views to the ocean. “Cher went to a princess wedding in India and they did henna in her hand”, says Martyn, she loved the draw and he used that pattern at the decor. Martyn used antiques and French decorative arts for the project, mixing that with custom-made furniture and things from a flea market.

Although known mainly for his high-end residential design, Martyn has also lent his talent to commercial and hospitality, designing the Colony Palms Hotel, Jimmy Choo Stores worldwide, and the Chateau Gutsch Hotel in Switzerland to name but a few. His upcoming projects include The Raleigh Hotel in Miami and the Californian Hotel in Santa Barbara and two brand new TV shows. He was also invited to make an opera setting, which he is loving to do because his father used to be an opera singer.

The Interior designer believes that inspiration comes from travel, “travel gets you so much, it’s amazing what a culture brings to you (…) keep your eyes open and never close your mind”, he claims.
