Best Interior Designers: Artistic Interiors by Charles Zana

Best Interior Designers: Artistic Interiors by Charles Zana – For twenty years from Paris to London, via Gstaad, Tel Aviv and Monaco, Charles Zana has shared his taste and expertise in the most beautiful residential and public interiors around the world. In two decades the architect, a graduate of the Beaux-Arts de Paris, has found his voice, forging his style and axes of influence, on the lookout for discerning clients demanding a unique vision. This vision is above all that of a lover of art, passionate about design, who speaks like an extract from key teachings. Charles Zana demonstrates an inexhaustible eloquence when asked to talk about a gallerist’s latest exhibition or the great masters of Italian design, from Andrea Branzi to Ettore Sottsass, not forgetting Enzo Mari. This passion is his trademark. But to reduce him to a specialist in Italian design would be a faux pas to be avoided.

For each project, he has a dual approach. First, that of a rigorous architect well versed in construction work, seeking comfort, fluid circulations, details, harmony, symmetry and discrete technology, but also capable of a nod to assimilating, when necessary, the history of places, of appropriating and of revisiting, of magnifying or of “twisting”. A cultured aesthete, he showcases the works of his clients, collectors whose eye he supports, like a curator of an exhibition. Referencing sculpture, abstraction, drawing and installation art, for each project he writes a new story, giving it greater conceptual value.

Beyond the profession of architect or designer, Charles Zana offers “curated stories” interiors, artistic and full of meaning, but also warm and responsive to the lives of the occupants. No bluff. He wants to herald a new tradition, one where classicism is revisited and combined with emotion, not the bard of interiors’ braggarts. This cannot be achieved without surrounding himself with talent.

A conductor, for each new project he brings together and leads a symphony composed of high-caliber artisans, experienced lighting designers, the best landscapers, according to the demands of the project. This group is part of the project at all stages, from conception to completion, finding solutions for each problem, proposing innovations, always at the service of creation. The result is a flawless execution combining luxury and intelligence where the architect disappears to better let his creation speak. Decoration signed by not monogrammed, where the style is clearly hard-fought, and wherein each day the client’s eye can be drawn to a new focus, a terrain cultural and aesthetic.

Interior Design Projects by Charles Zana

Cheyne garden, London

This London apartment is totally redesigned in the style of the American Shakers, a movement synonymous with functionality, restraint, and soundness, with pine flooring and paneled walls. The interior is a patchwork of marble, linen, travertine, bronze, and lacquered wood that serves as a setting for a unique collection of American works of art.

Utopia, Paris
Along with Tornabuoni Art gallery, Charles Zana imagined Utopia exhibition as a walk-through Italian art and architecture from the post-war era: Gino Sarfatti and Paolo Scheggi, Carlo Scarpa and Dadamaino, Enrico Castellani and Nanda Vigo, Michele De Lucchi and Alberto Burri… many artists and works that mirror each other, and question the same vision of time, the same concern for the place of man in the world, the same relationship with the profane and the sacred.

Hôtel Lou Pinet, Saint-Tropez

The essence of natural light within the project inspired Charles Zana for the interiors of the Hotel Lou Pinet to bring sophistication and intimacy to each space. With a taste for elegance, inspired by artists such as Matisse, Calder and Picasso, Hotel Lou Pinet’s decor features numerous period pieces from this era in addition to drawing on Provence’s tremendous decorative arts heritage, from glasswork to ceramics.

Hôtel Crillon Le Brave

Inspired by the historic charm of this magnificent hill-village-turned-hotel, all built in honey-coloured stone, Charles Zana created various interior harmonies specific to each private space for Hotel Crillon Le Brave. While honouring the idyllic spirit of the place, a fresh essence has encompassed the hotel, where the timeless Provence style finds a whole new sense of modernity.

Grenelle, Paris

Hidden in a 18th-century hotel particulier, Charles Zana’s private apartment reveals all its secrets. Coated in a sage green, every room is punctuated with objects and pieces of furniture from eras that have nothing in common. Charles Zana has always liked to intersect various periods. From well-known Italian designers from the post-war era to the spirit of Enlightenment, the French interior designer prefers a subtle luxury and understated lines.

Monceau, Paris

Situated on the edge of the Parc Monceau, on first sight, it bears all the attributes of a typical nineteenth-century Parisian hôtel particulier. Inside, Charles Zana has completely rethought the flow of spaces and volumes to offer its occupants a haven that is totally dedicated to family life.

COVETED 19

Campo St Stefano, Venise

To preserve the soul of the locale, Charles Zana undertook a process of restoration, enabling a collection of contemporary art to coexist with the decor of a magnificent seventeenth-century Venetian palazzo, formerly home to a doge.
