Celebrity Homes: Steven Meisel’s Midcentury Residence in LA

The fashion photographer Steven Meisel found his home in a 1963 home designed by architect George MacLean in Beverly Hills, California. Make a tour with celebrity homes:

At photographer Steven Meisel’s 1963 George MacLean–designed house in the Beverly Hills, California, neighborhood of Trousdale Estates, the architecture firm Marmol Radziner + Assoc. expanded the dwelling’s zigzagging footprint, added tropical plantings, and remodeled the rear terrace’s curvy swimming pool. Inside, designer Brad Dunning created a tribute to ’60s Trousdale style.

The den includes sofas and a cocktail table custom made by Dunning; the James Mont ottoman is covered in a Jim Thompson silk, and the bespoke rug is by Edward Fields.

A sunburst mirror from JF Chen accents a wall of mica tile in the living room; the chairs are by Michael Berman, and the driftwood-and-glass table and curved Monteverdi-Young sofa are original to the house.

A vintage William Haines stool sits in the library, next to walnut bookshelves.

Lined with photographs by Sat Gurumukh Khalsa, Meisel’s bedroom features vintage Tommi Parzinger lamps; Dunning designed the headboard and pop-up TV cabinet, both upholstered in an Edelman leather, as well as the Macassar-ebony bedside tables.

Meisel came up with the idea of the hybrid home office/master bath, which is sheathed in green onyx; the teak screen is by Dunning, and the cabinetry is by Marmol Radziner. The curtains are of a Jim Thompson silk, and a resin sculpture by Dorothy Draper is displayed on the vintage Jansen desk.
