Celebrity News: Buy Private Island Designed by Frank Lloyd Wright – About 50 miles north of New York City in Putnam County’s Mahopac Lake is an 11-acre heart-shaped island named Petra and it’s for sale.
It’s the site of not one but three Frank Lloyd Wright–designed buildings: a large main home and two small guest cottages. However the Frank Lloyd Wright Foundation won’t recognize the property as a true Wright work.
In 1949 the island was purchased by engineer Ahmed Chahroudi, who commissioned Wright to design a grand home for himself. But he didn’t have enough money for the full house. The plans were scaled back, and Wright built a small cottage for Chahroudi instead.
Fast-forward half a century, and Chahroudi’s original plans were brought to life by the island’s new owner, John Massaro, who tapped Wright scholar and architect Thomas Heinz to work off, and slightly modernize, Wright’s original plans. The current house was completed in 2007 and bears the hallmarks of Wright’s signature aesthetic, from the use of natural materials to his love of geometry.
So, if you don’t mind that the six-bedroom, 3.5-bath house is not technically part of the official Frank Lloyd Wright canon, it can be yours for just $14.9 million.
